This is a really simple question with a really long answer! I won't attempt anything scientific but will try to summarise...
When you use a high ISO and/or a long exposure time on a camera you will get noise.
It has a number of causes, ranging from the fact that all the pixels on a camera have slightly different sensitivities, that the processing the camera does to convert the information to a picture is imperfect (and always will be) and even the background radiation of the Universe!
Do a simple test. Set your camera to its lowest ISO setting and take a picture, then move to its highest ISO and take another (remembering that your Aperture or Shutter speed will need to change) then compare the two.

All electrical circuits generate random electrical impulses as well as the signal proper. You can hear it from a loudspeaker as hiss. You see it in an image as noise.
The difference in level between the background noise and the required signal is the "signal to noise ratio". In an image, this background noise appears mainly in shadows, where the signal level (dark tones) is not much above the noise level.

Thanks for the advise - I think Not sureI will now be able to see noise on my pictures but I will go away and practise. Hopefully you will see the results
