Another pair from yesterday. These have plenty of sky as well as foreground.

Original at 0 exp comp. Some sharpening

Comment Image

HDR version with some desaturation and same sharpening as above.

It would seem that colour balance may also be required?

Any comments?

Did you de-saturate the second one, or reduce contrast? It looks more like the latter. I think in general HDR images need a decent boost to the contrast to look a bit less fake.

Desaturated by -10 in PS. Not sure if I'm using Photomatix correctly. Its like the first time in the darkroom trying to get good colour prints!

I think contrast maybe sacrificed in the HDR process? It appears to look like fill flash.. sort of...

Sorry, I was a bit confused and thought the first one was your HDR, and the second one was a decreased saturation version

Yes, agree about reducing sat in second one, possibly even a little more - the veggies look slightly radioactive. I still think it needs a bit of a contrast or black point bump.

You've also got the problem of wind, you can see the leaves on the far left and top of the frame have been moving slightly in your HDR. 'Faking' an HDR using three versions of the same RAW file (one normal, one under exposed, one over exposed) can be quite useful in windy situations.

I think the wind problem is probably due to the local food.

I will persevere with the HDR processing until I find an acceptable route that does not eat too much time. I spent two days after the golf open, processing several hundred images. My laptop needs liquid Nitrogen cooling.

I thought you had a K7? From what I've seen the built-in HDR function isn't too shabby!

Yes I have the K7 with me but have not used that function yet.

Only use the three R's.

Raperture, fRocus and Release.

Oh and a bit of Rexposure comp now & then.

I really really wish I had a FF digital MX......

The second one looks like it's received big burst of flash lighting up the palm tree.

I have to say, that K7 does a remarkable job of retaining detail in shadows and highlight straight out of the camera, before you get to HDR.

Sorry...that's not what you wanted to hear!

No problem Andrew, I am just trying some techniques that are new for me and don't mind posting the results. It lets other see what can be done, not professing that it is all good and thumbs up.

Had another play after reading the instructions for Photomatix

I think this is better HDR as colours are natural.

or not?

Looks like it, but the photo's are in my opinion missaligned. if you look at the first photo, it's razor sharp.. But if you look at the HDR you see that the top branches are moved.

Colorwise it realy looks good

Yes, this is much more natural. The light is well balanced and the colours more muted.

Definitely honing your technique here, Gary.

Just a thought (random) are the locals adverse to a little street photography out there? If not, you could compile a great set of exotic images using HDR skills (probably in camera) to balance the deep shadows and the blinding sunlit buildings.

Andrew

There are no issues with street photography here Andrew.

I will do a set, as per your suggestion and post results.
