Dandelion seed heads

Im posting these to get some feedback on the principle of what im trying to do,(not because i think there great) which is to use flash to light and get sharp result but also allow me to capture some movement. The lack of available willing human participant today forced my hand and ended up practicing on these.

Its going well! Nice effect and sense of movement. The exposure on the middle one is a bit low. Did you try changing between leading and trailing curtain sync?

Hi Nigel, no I didn't I'm still just trying to get used to how different things that I do affect the end result. I will have a look at both of those tomorrow and will see what the end result is. It might help me work out what mode or settings I need for what I have in mind.
It's great though. I've gone from never using flash, or if I absolutely had to, hating the result because I didn't understand how flash works, to knowing just enough to make me confident enough to to be comfortable experimenting with it. With no small thanks to you and your very helpful flash guides.

Having looked at trailing curtain sync, thats exactly what im after.
Will have a go later and see how i get on.

Great, that should produce even different results.

Hi Nigel. I don't know if my flash is stuck on lead curtain, as the flash fire once at the start and that's it. Is the symbol supposed to change as I move the selector switch, the symbol with the arrow heads, ? As on the flash unit the opposite arrow is solid colour to the one on the flash controls on the camera, if you know what I mean

Hi Derek,

Looking at your flashgun set-up there, there's a simple explanation ..... you're in Auto-Flash 'A' mode (useful for old non-coupled lenses). This flash mode is not compatable with trailing curtain sync. Despite your correct control settings thae flash will be fixed in leading curtain sync unfortunately (thats why the symbol does not change). Switch to P-TTL or Manual flash mode

Ahh well at least i can recognize lead and trailing sync trails now, last night i didnt know anything about those modes. Its all good.
Now to find a use to put it to, May speak nicely to my daughter.

Yes, that's excellent ! Now the blurring 'trails' behind the object, looking much more natural. Did you need to be using 'A' mode, or were you just trying it out?
