It's probably me mentally blocking out the concept of fill in flash as I'm really flash-averse as I just never like the look of pictures I take with flash - I'd in general rather have something dark, gloomy and shadow ridden to deal with than something lit with flash. I just want to create some interesting portraits outside rather than the usual studio type shot, am really enjoying mixing flash and ambient and learning loads.
In theory I should much prefer the fill in flash approach but on the few occasions I experimented I was dissatisfied with different colour temperatures between the flash and ambient light and ended up wishing I simply hadn't used the flash. I guess if it was a portrait/studio set-up and I was able to use some gels and stuff for controlling the flash and light temperatures that would be a different thing, but that's not my style of photography.
I *know* I should be using fill in flash sometimes, and I'm missing out. I just haven't liked the result.The lighting on your third image does look good though, maybe I should try again.

Rob, i hope i am not teaching you to suck eggs, but i found that between 30% to 40% flash mixed with 60% to 70% ambient works very well. I use a 1/4 CTO gel on my flash head and set my WB to either 5300 or 5500.[quote:3496ace15f="Fletcher8"][

The P-TTL on the K3 works really well, but i could never get it right on the K5. I would say the flash P-TTL metering is as good as the competition on the K3. If you -EV about 1 or 1.5 stops off the flash you will get a better mix of flash and ambient and i often use a bounce card when i am doing run and gun stuff. so far things are working really well, but i like flash off camera and in manual when I am not pushed for time.

Thanks Smeggypants. I wish the ND idea was truly mine, I am not sure who first came up with the idea, but everything I have learnt in relation to flash and off camera flash is down to David Hobby and his blog Strobist / lighting 101.
