Great pictures Roger (a little more contrast needed maybe), but my god they are UGLY!!! I posted a comment on one of Dr. O's pictures of a crane fly and said that it reminded me of the aliens in 'War of the Worlds'. I haven't changed my views!

Nice shots, I've never had much luck with these (unless you count the aquatic larva of another cranefly species!)

I think craneflies are actually horribly difficult subjects because they're so big and gangly, but their most interesting feature is their small iridescent eyes which of course you can't get in much detail if you shoot the whole bug So I think you have 2 choices for a nice cranefly shot, either an extreme macro on their eyes in particular which avoids distracting OOF areas, or their very distinctive silhouette against some edge. On the plus dide, these definitely capture some of the interesting eye colours. But there's also quite a lot of empty and distracting background.
... just another middle-aged guy with a hobby. I have an extreme macro learning site at extreme-macro.co.uk - Pentax-centric, your feedback and comments would be appreciated!

Very good, I had a go at taking some shots today of the same type of critter, so realise how difficult they are.
I have the 100mm Pentax macro lens, but I don’t have a converter. Does the Kenco 2x converter, transfer all functions to the lens, ie auto focus & aperture control.
Take care.

Thanks, Neil Nass & Chris.
I think, Nass, a frame-filling eye-detail shot is probably beyond my equipment but, certainly, my technical ability! Will give it a go, though!
Yes, Chris all functions are transfered but, personally, I never use AF at these levels of magnification, always manual.
Best Regards,
Roger.

Cropped & levels adjusted, sharpened, PSE9, Neat Image.
Worth it / does it work?
( I don't think so. Not so much for the lessening of IQ, but, compositionally, I think those "wide open spaces" give more of a sense of, a feel for, the creature.
Roger.
