As it is a * lens, Pentax would recommend you send it to their offical servicing agents Johnsons http://www.johnsons-photopia.co.uk/JP%20Service%20Solutions_17.php
Why not give them a ring and explain the problem. They are based in Leek, so maybe even worth a visit. For calibration, they might need your camera as well. It is possible that the problem is because camera and lens are at different extremes of their production tolerances.
They do not charge for the initial inspection and if you decide not to have the work done, the only charge will be for return packaging.

I just gave them a call and they are closed for the Xmas break, but I guess I have waited 3 years so it won't hurt to wait a few more days.
Thanks for the link and info. I will probably visit as its not far.
many thanks

I have a Pentax 17-70 which was back-focusing more than the K-5 could adjust.
I sent it in to Johnsons, and they sorted it out, charged me 120 quid.
Top tip: if you're going to join Pentax User Plus in order to get the 20% off servicing at Johnsons, get a written quotation from them BEFORE telling them that you're a PU member.

I was never really happy with the results I was getting and I had a few images fail IQ with Alamy as SOLD.
I put this down to my poor technique, and some of it probably was.
However after a lay off I have returned to photography and after taking photo's with the 12-24 and the 50-135 which are really sharp I realised I may have a problem with the lens. None of my images with this lens are sharp it seems at any point.
I have used the focus chart and I am getting quite a large degree of back focus, adjustment in camera certainly brings it forward but even with full adjustment it does not quite seem to be right. Its difficult to judge because nowere is perfectly sharp.
Therefore I am guessing a faulty lens
So, what am I to do? The lens is at least 3 years old so out of warranty.
