Matt,
Look into my eyes , only my eyes , nowhere else, just my eyes . . . .
Are you under? . . . . Good, you know you want one, just do it.
I am, and I don't need one, I just want one, that's enough justification for me.
Demonstrates the marketing power of the Pentax brand I guess.
OK, I'll count backwards from 10, on the count of 1 you will be wide awake, 10, 9, 8, err, umm . . . .

I'm not sure if I do want one yet. Sacriledge?
The 16-45mm is quite compact compared to the 16-50mm, so I think I'll wait and see it in the glass so to speak before I jump in.
And then there's that huge filter size...it's fortunate that I rarely use filters.

Apparently they've run out of stock in Japan
Pentax supposedly didn't seem this much demand for these new lenses and doesn't have enough of them.
Sounds rather stupid to me...

I definitely don't need one
It's just that the bokeh looks much nicer than the 16-45. The 24-90 has wonderful bokeh, and I'm loathed to sell it on.
Filter size - I have 77mm Lee and Cokin filters already Nice to standardise on one filter between the 12-24 and 16-50.
But it'll have to wait all the same. By the time I can actually afford it (or them) maybe the price will have come down... or maybe it'll be actually available

Do you mean:
http://www.dslrphoto.com/2007/07/22/japan-most-popular-camera-ranking-july-9-to-...
Either way, I don't see how the situation will be any different with the 16-50.
Anyone else think these lenses would be perfect for events and weddings?
Set-up:
K10D + 16-50 + AF-540 FGZ + Stofen Bounce
K10D + 50-135 + AF-540 FGZ + Stofen Bounce

. . . maybe the price will have come down...
It is true that camera bodies reduce in price (and SH value) as time goes on, but I'm not sure that the same will be true of lenses.. . . maybe the price will have come down...
Pentax DSLR bodies in the past have been rapidly replaced by a new model making the older ones obsolete and/or difficult to obtain. Their lens range however has remained almost unchanged save the addition of new lenses, not replacements.
I don't count the DS/DS2 or DL/DL2 revisions or even the K100D/K110D, more the *istD being replaced by the K10D within approx. 3 years.
My 'need', if I have one, of the 16-50mm/50-135mm DA* 1:2.8 lenses is more a desire to be able to take pictures indoors without flash. Of late I have been visiting various shows, fiestas and music gigs, where the use of flash would be wholly inappropriate, either because the animals involved (horses mostly) would be startled, or the camera might be confiscated at music gigs.
