Cut out----Removable Bit----On lens Hood ???

On my 16-45 lens the lens hood has a little bit that pulls off, with out seeming thick as a bit of wood What's it for/Why is it there please.:

The idea is that, with it removed, you can rotate your polariser with the lens hood on, it should be at the bottom

As Ken says...very handy it is too, unfortunately my Sigma 17-70 doesn't have it !!

Yes one of the reasons, and it's surprising even with 25+ years with one brand there's still things to learn
