Critter on a ladder

Any idea what this is/was? I found it attached to an old metal ladder in my Dad's shed. I also found some attached to the underside of a stone birdbath. Apologies for the image quality - my macro skills are, quite frankly, rubbish. Not helped by the wobbliest tripod in the world.

Looks to me like it could be a ladybird (or similar) larvae. If it is and it's hatched it probably would be more of an empty shell, so maybe it's about to come out. I remember watching one come out when I was a boy, don't think my Brownie camera (cost 25p at a jumble sale) would have caught it as well as you have though!

I guess they have to come from somewhere
