Creating a Cliche

Had a drive up to Flamborough on Sunday and could nor resist my own spin on this favorite destination after David Storm's recent images. The first 2 shots unashamedly mirroring David's (sorry David - couldn't resist but I think you had better cloud over the lighthouse than I got)

All taken on the K5IIs and Sigma 10-20 with a variety of Lee ND grads and a CPL

As always C+C welcome

Lovely set of vibrant images....

What you need are lenses, more lenses, bigger lenses, better lenses, faster lenses, vintage lenses and when you have these, your pictures will be perfect!

Hi Carl, I love the Lighthouse images but for one significant thing. Composition is great, sharpness is great, colours are nicely saturated.

The thing that bothers me is that they both look yellow instead of white and this is not how they are in real life.

I think I mentioned something a while back about a yellow tinge on some of your images and it is very noticeable on these. Unfortunately because of this it spoils them for me.

The other pics you've posted here are superb too, but again they have the yellow tinge. I don't think this is intentional (is it?), maybe there is a settings issue somewhere on the camera or in post processing?

Sorry to give this feedback but I think it's best to be honest because I think it is holding back some of your shots from being absolute stunners.

Best wishes
David

All striking and effective images Carl, full of interest, depth and detail. The yellow saturation looks ok on the water generally, quite attractive there, but its coming over too strong on the rocks and grasses, and on the lighthouse too. I don't think its just white balance, I'd pull down the yellow channel a bit overall and see how that goes.

Would love to see them with any adjustments, it's an amazing bit of coastline and excellent images!

Thanks both - I seem to have had this issue since I bought a new monitor about 3 months ago. When I load them from the camera - they look too blue - sometimes hitting auto WB in LR4 seems to correct it viewed on my monitor - this is what had been done here.

I have re-set them all to WB settings used in camera - does this correct it? If so - no idea what is going one - why would auto WB in LR4 give a yellow cast ?

Hi Carl

Yes, they do look better on the second set with the adjusted WB. I do still think there's a hint of yellow on the Chalk Lighthouse and having seen this structure 'in the flesh' so to speak, I know it is pure white.

I would try pulling the yellow channel down and see what that does; it would also make the grass look more of a realistic green as this too still looks as though it has a bit too much yellow in it.

So, a very definite improvement on the second set, but still not quite there for me on the colour balance.

Regards
David

I was about to post almost exactly the same comment
