Jacqui can I suggest, in addition to looking online, you look in your area and see if there are any courses given, maybe at a local cultural centre, or as an evening class. I learned so much from doing a course with others, and reviewing each others photos, going on practical lessons and the like. Plus it really makes you get out there and do the assignment.

Eevrybody learns differently.

some people enjoy taking courses.
some might do just as well going to thier local library.
there are no magic secrets to photography.

if you think you can learn on your own...just grab your camera, and start practicing.

We've actually had people we liked, (others not so well liked, (no names being mentioned on purpose)) that simply started asking questions on these forums.....then we watched those progress to professional quality work in very little time.
You'll find everybody here very willing to teach and help (even to some unusaul individuals that insulted, confronted, and antagonized, members of this forum every step of the way, (again no names :twisted)

so if you're eager to learn, try things out and ask questions, you'll get lots of help here for free that you'd have to pay for elswhere.
Try the search functions.

Another route to consider is your local camera/photography club.

The one I attend sets monthly themed photographic challenges which are great for improving your skills - and you get to regularly meet like minded people and swap ideas etc.

Or indeed your local Further Education College where they will probably have a range of courses some of which will lead to NVQ (or whatever they call it now) or A level etc.

I think one issue with formal qualifications is that they will still expect you to do film.
