Well, so far after 5 days of notifying the said local group about them flagrantly abusing my copyright, I have had no response from them.
Can I ask how you "notified" them? Was it e-mail, telephone call, letter, fax? I'm just thinking that some people aren't as keen as others about checking their e-mail, some tend to take less notice of "ordinary" letters and faxes than others. Well, so far after 5 days of notifying the said local group about them flagrantly abusing my copyright, I have had no response from them.
Perhaps a Recorded Delivery letter or a Solicitor's Letter might elicit a better response?

Keen2Learn you may be thinking of Getty Images who had a blitz on web sites using their stock images without payment. They sent stiff letters indicating the fees due with no option of just ceasinbg to use them (as I recall). Some people paid, some bargained and some advised them where they might go having first removed the images.
I suspect getty made a lot on money - quite reasonably really.

It was a company attempting to claim the copyright to all photos.
I'll see if I can find the link somewhere.

Keen2Learn - I think you might be referring to proposed changes to the copyright laws in the US...

Well funny you should mention the newspaper! I have just fallen out with them also, after getting my first double page spread with them - a reportage re. restoration of our famous street kennels.
Said rag credited all my pics to a 'paid' reporter! After expressing my disgust, rag put in a tiny note next week not even apologising, but stated they were asked to correct it.
So I dont think I shall be contacting them, I think my editiorial days have come to an end, seems there is no appreciation, well, at least here!
I did some marketing work for my school, an article on a couple of friends of mine, they wanted a photographer and my friends suggested me (not boasting but the professional that they get in, and probably pay a shedload to, is crap.) Anyway, they said oh, you will be credited etc. Well funny you should mention the newspaper! I dont know if bylines are such a big deal, good for the ego perhaps, but I had some pictures published in a national last week as part of an advertorial and I didn't expect or receive a creditLilly wrote:

Ray.
Solicitors charge around £200 per hour, probably a bit more than any fee in the circumstances.

Try Thomas Higgins.
Used to be £1.50. Probably slightly more now.

Edited to add: £1.50 per letter, not per hour.

If you don't get any response from them, you could always try tracking down their web hosting provider and asking them to remove the images. Most ISPs have terms and conditions that require users to have copyright clearance for anything they upload. That's not to say they necessarily enforce them...

I have been thinking, and this is the result.
Stage one. Send an invoice for a reasonable fee for the use of the image(s), together with a polite letter pointing out that they are in breach of copyright, and have ten days to remove the images or pay the invoice.
Stage two. Either bank the cheque, or after ten days contact Thomas Higgins and ask them to send a letter before action. The miscreants then have seven days to pay or face legal action and costs.
On the eighth day, TH will contact you and ask if you want to issue a summons. If no payment has been received, say yes.
Stage three. Bank the cheque.
The initial letter is now £2.00 (was £1.50 fifteen years ago when I used them regularly).
Note that this technique will work with proper businesses in the UK, but not people operating from a garage in Mongolia.

Just picked up this thread as I have just discovered a relatively new website/forum has copied some of my website images and is using them in their "header" on the site.
I've emailed each of the site administrators notifying them of copyright breach as the first stage. I'm awaiting their response, the info on this thread may well prove useful

YES, useful thank you G, have saved info for a future date, fortunately have not had to go down the legal path 'this time'! But this is a learning curve and in this situation 'too much info' is not a dangerous thing, me thinks!
