A few from this hidden gem in a rather attractive part of South London. The very hot spell we've had sometimes didn't provide many photo moments, but I think it made this place shine, both under and out of the forest canopy.

K7 plus Samyang 14mm, had to handhold unfortunately.

It looks a beautiful tranquil place, Nigel, and (viewing on Google Maps) it appears to be not far from the town centre. The photos are nice shots but I'm not sure about the colour balance - they seem to have a slightly too green hue to me.

Colour balance looks OK to me. My thought is perhaps a little over-sharpened but otherwise fine.

These are nice yet there's some off about the PP; as said there's a greenish hue and the skies look 'added in' somehow.

Thanks for the feedback - the skies should be easily sorted. They're not actually 'blended' or anything - they were whiteouts exposure-wise and I used the magig wand to select all pixels of tha tone, then in levels pulled down the red output, but I think in the forest ones it looks a bit too cyan ?

The ones in the open are OK though aren't they? I'll re-do the skys in the forect ones and you can see.

Colour balance has me confused a bit - varying reports, and I see them differently in Chrome & IE browsers on my working machine - in chrome they look OK as in my image viewer. On my work PC using XP & IE6 colours are iffy. Noe sure if its down to colour management or just different monitor profiles?

I would say rather vivid and with a definite yellow/green bias. If you see the colours differently in Chrome and IE then you have a colour management issue. Use sRGB all through the workflow and you'll avoid it.

IE6 is rather old now by the way, but on a work machine I guess you'll have little choice.
Best regards, John

Yes its a sort of dirty cyan colour; and the edge of the selection is very obvious (to me). Using soft selection edges and accepting that the edges of the trees will be affected would probably look more natural. What's so wrong with white skies anyway? I'm happy with a white sky that includes just a little cloud detail. It looks more natural to me.

I've had a go at adjusting the skies in a couple of the forest shots ...

Do these look better ? I'm loath to remove all blue because then it just makes the huge DR too obvious.

Sky still looks an unnatural, dull blue to me. Much less so in the second shot though. There are also blocked up highlights in the upper tree trunks. Beautiful crisp shots otherwise though!

Would be interested to see the originals. I'm not sure why the obsession with re-creating DR which the camera seems to have failed to actually record at the time of capture. (If that makes any sense!)

OK - lets try again! This is about as 'original' as I can get - a straight RAW conversion, plus small saturation boost, a bit of NR & sharpening. I've switched the working profile to sRGB (from ProPhoto) and also maintained sRGB in PS Elements, where I saved the web version JPEGs.

I hope this is an improvement in all respects!

Thanks again for your impressions - Nigel

Hi Nigel

These last ones still look a little too yellow on my monitor whereas the other various landscapes posted recently on the Gallery all look right, so I don't think it is my monitor setting.

Puzzling ?

I've come back to this thread a few times as I'm interested in the observations given.

Whenever I shoot images in woodland I invariably do two things:

1. Make sure they are a little under-exposed to avoid any blown highlights as it is always easier to bring out shadow details than to recover blown highlights
2. Reduce the yellows in post processing as they always tend to come out looking 'artificial' due to the light quality and colouration in woodland, when trees are in leaf

For what it's worth, I think Nigel is struggling a bit with these shots to correct issues that are present on the original exposures, mostly a slight over-exposure which cannot easily be reversed in post processing. To regain colour in the skies, a 'forced' look is the result.

I think the colour accuracy could easily be improved by an overall reduction in yellow saturation, whereas for the skies it might be worth going back and re-shooting the images in similar lighting, and reducing the exposure levels by 1/3 to 2/3 stops, or even a bit more, then processing to enhance shadow details.
