Converting RAW files to make exposure value changes at high resolution

I have tried having a go at using the Pentax Digital Utility 4 software that came with my Pentax K-X and seem to be having problems saving images at high resolution when converting to JPEG from a RAW file.

I have wanted to use it for changing the exposure values, to create a pseudo-HDR image in Photomatix Pro (where there is significant movement in the image, making it not possible to take multiple exposures without 'ghosting').

When I save the JPEG it ends up being saved at 72dpi, rather than the 300dpi that the RAW file was. Can't seem to work out how to save it at a higher resolution....

The dpi setting does not actually change the image resolution when using the Pentax program.

The dpi setting is just saved as a number in the Exif info in the JPEG file - which other programs and devices may or may not do something with.

The dpi number is only significant when you print an image (relates to the printer's dpi).

ppi (pixels per inch) relates to the image. dpi (dots per inch) relates to the printer output. These terms regularly get confused...

You are of course correct, John, but is it not true that pixels in the image (ppi) translate to dots (dpi) in the printer?

What I wrote above applies also to ppi for the Pentax program.

The terms ppi and dpi are often confused even by software developers.

No again! If each pixel was represented by one dot of ink that would be a pretty lousy image! When I print, the colour of 300 pixels is made up of 2880 dots of ink. This results in a rather better print!

Back to the OP, providing the image size (x pixels by y pixels) remains the same, forget the ppi, dpi etc. and go ahead and process your files.

Ok. I think I understand now. An image of, say, 3000 x 2400 pixels at 300 ppi (pixels per inch) will make a 10" x 8" print on paper. The printer's dpi determines how many dots the printer will use to create one pixel of the image. (At least that's what I see on my own printer).

But until the image is printed, it remains a 3000 x 2400 pixels image, the ppi doesn't matter.
