Connecting to driver other than E:

Any idea how I connect the camera (via USB) to a drive letter other than E: ?

Or at least so that it shows up as F: G: or something else?

Each drive on a computer has a letter to define it - when we load the software for a new piece of kit it will allocate a new letter, or when the kit is attached it will deliver a "New hardware Found" message and go through the process from there. During this process, I think you can allocate any unused letter you want. On this PC, for example, I have drives labelled from C through D, E, F, G, H etc.

You can change the drive letter easily on Win2K or Win XP ( can't remember how to do it in 95 or 98 ) by rightclicking on My Computer then select Manage - Storage - Disk Management, select the drive you want to change then rightclick the the icon (left side of window) and select "change drive letter", select any available drive letter.

Curious to know why as every time you connect the camera, Windows will assign the first available drive letter i.e. if you have HD 'C' and CD 'D' it will assign 'E'.

That doesn't really help.

I'm using XPP and have in the past been leaving E: unassigned so that the camera can connect to it.

If I connect E: to a network path (using the mapping on tools menu) and then switch on the camera, the camera's drive is not visible - i.e. it does not automatically pick up the next available letter which in this case is G:

Okay - that worked - thanks McBrian. These are the steps I followed:
1. Unmap drive E:
2. Connect camera (maps itself to E
3. Remap camera (using your guide above) to G:
4. Remap E: to desired network path
5. Go home a happy camper

There is a bug in XP in the way it automatically maps drives. Removable drives e.g. cameras connected by USB, flash/pen drives etc are mapped to the next available drive letter, normally the next letter after the CD or DVD drives. If the CD-ROM was on D then connecting a removable drive it XP would automatically map it to E. Network drives are mapped starting at Z then Y then X etc. If you map a network drive to the next letter after the last built-in drive, as you have found out, XP will not map the removable drive correctly. When mapping network drives it is best to leave a gap in the drive letters after the last built-in drive.

A: Floppy Disc
C: System Drive (hard drive or partition)
D: Data Drive ((hard drive or partition)
E: CD-ROM
F: DVD-RW
G: leave free for removable drives

.
Y: Network drive 1
Z: Network drive 2

Thanks Dave, that's useful to know. Unfortunately I've installed some software (WinCVS) and it thinks that the database is on E: (which is where it was when I originally installed WinCVS) and I can't for the life of me work out how to reconfigure WinCVS to point to another drive so I have to map/unmap the whole time but now the camera points to another drive so that's okay.

Thanks for the info - I'll map the drives differently next time.
