Combining images in PSE

I've tried to combine images in PSE in order to blend exposures a couple of times over the past week, but haven't got PSE to do what I want it to. I'm sure the solution is relatively simple but my PP-ing skills are so rudimentary.

I've worked on two images processed at different settings in Silkypix - Image A & B, for the purposes of this post. Then I've selected the area of the image I want to appear at a lighter exposure - small in both cases - using the lasso tool in Image A. I've then cut it to a new layer, and deleted the background layer. So I end up with an image consisting of one layer - the area selected with the lasso.

I then open my main image - Image B - which is exposed for the bulk of the picture. And after that I drag the layer from Image A into this.

Now I would anticipate that the area selected in Image A would maintain the same scale as the original photo - so that A & B would combine easily. However, what happens is that the area selected in A is resized when I move it into B, and a box containing the selection and blank space around it appears in Image B.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I agree that it should work that way. However, I usually do it differently: I copy one exposure onto the other. Open A, then open B and drag the (only) layer of B into A. Then adjust position of the B layer. Now add a mask (reveal all) to the upper layer and take a black brush on that mask to paint everything on the mask layer where you want to see layer A.

Hope that helps,

Yes, that seems much more logical. No danger of unwanted re-sizing this way (at least, I assume not).

Cheers, Ralf.
