Colour film processing

Does anybody still do this?

A friend of mine has a load of old print films, and I have suggested he process them himself. He's got a tank, and now needs chemicals. Any suggestions as to what to use, and where to get it?

Rayco used to be a good source of chemicals. I just wonder if it isn't going to be doing it the hard way though - the C41 process is quite a specific high temperature one and it might be much easier to just have someone put them through a one hour processing system. The cost of that coupled with all the proof prints you'll get will establish which images are worth scanning and dealing with further.

On the other hand, he might have a lot of fun out of doing the job, in which case Rayco might still be a good place to start.

I buy all my chemicals from RK photographic. They sometimes have some really cheap end of line chemicals like Foma, that still works fine. ANd they always stock most of the other brands as cheap as anywhere I've found.link

Have a look at Ag Photographic, they do all things film related.

I quite fancy having a go at this. I know it's complicated but the main problem seems to be the temperature, the chemicals I've seen suggest that you only need two substances and they seem surprisingly tolerant. One bit of advice I saw claimed that if you made a water bath at a couple of degrees over the recommended temperature then it would remain within tolerances throughout the developing process (keeping the fixer warm while you use the developer). Not sure how realistic that idea is!

Can you still buy thermometers that are accurate enough?
The Paterson Certified were something like +/- 0.2deg C.

I've still got an Ilford Digital +/- 0.1deg C but it might
have drifted off.

I have always processed b&w, but I will be having a go at colour soon as I have a couple of 8x11 Minox films to develop. I have had the chemicals from AG Photographic for some time and built up a temperature controlled water bath for the tank out of an ASDA kettle, a plastic storage box, and temperature control I built for the Jeep! The tank temperature seems to hold nicely within less than 0.5 degs. I must find some time to actually try it out properly.

That's looks quite good considering the price of commercial tanks
