Cokin P Filters

I have a set of Cokin P filters. The Cokin site says that they are suitable for focal lengths from 28mm. I am about to take delivery of a Pentax 16-45 which is a 35mm equivalent of 24mm at the wide end. Does anyone have any experience of P filter system and this (or similar focal length lenses)? Am I going to have problems with shading around the edges (vignetting?)? If so can I just cut the outer slot or two from a P mount or am I going to have to invest in larger filters and mount system?
Cheers

With a Tian Ya P holder (cheap Cokin P copy), I could only see the edges of holder in the viewfinder at 12mm with a Sigma 10-20mm on K10D. I would expect it to be completely OK at 16mm.

I have not had any problem using my P filters on the 18mm Kit lens. The main limiter that I am aware of is the size of the filter thread.

Thanks for you quick replies,

Pete, where did you getb the Tian Ya P holder? I may need to get one if I have issues later

beakynet - I too have been OK with the kit lens but this falls within the 28mm recommendation!

Hi
I use Cokin P size filters on a DA*16-50 which has a thread size of 77mm against the the thread size of 67mm on the DA16-45.

With my lens there is viginetting if I use a standard P holder, but there is a slim P holder (only takes one filter). I've emulated a slim holder by cutting 2 slots off of a standard P holder (I had a spare so went the cheep route) and provided I line the holder up with slot parallel to short side of frame there is no viginetting.

Of course if you are not using ND grad filters then the slots can be rotated 90 degrees which would give even more clearence.

As the DA16-45 is a smaller diameter lens then you may be able to use the standard holder - I would think definitly if not using graduated filters. If there is viginetting then just get the slim holder (or chop slots off of standard holder) and you will be fine.

I belong in the always have a UV filter fitted camp so without a UV filter fitted the P holder would have a further few mm of clearence.

good luck
Bob

Just to re-iterate...

The SMC-DA 16-45 (which has a 67mm filter) is perfectly fine with Cokin P filters

The SMC-DA 12-24 (which has a 72mm filter) can just about work with Cokin P filters if you use a wide angle, single filter holder (or, as I did, hack up a spare filter holder by cutting off all but one filter slot and filing out the inside rim slightly).

And... www.srbfilm.co.uk do a reasonably priced Kood P-size Polarising filter that slips into the P-holder. That works too!

HTH!

*ahem* 77mm filter *ahem*

I've been waiting 18 months to correct MM on one of his posts!

And I use the "wide angle" Cokin P holder on the 12-24 and it works fine down to about 14mm with only very slight vignetting below.

Thanks All. Seems I may be alright - if not I'll cut down a standard or get a slim holder.

Can't remember where I got the Tian Ya holder from, but it looks exactly the same as this "Kood" one:

In fact I can see the Tian Ya name upside down on the item in the photo. It's also sold even more cheaply from Hong Kong eBay sellers not mentioning a brand name.

You're absolutely right... it's 77mm.
(My excuse is that I'm not near a camera right now, and my forgettery isn't quite what it used to be )

Well, it is (in my experience) as long as when you're at 16mm you don't have the holder at an angle, otherwise it does vignette slightly in opposite corners.

As long the holder is vertical or horizontal (I mean the slots that hold the filters are parallel with the edges of the sensor), it's fine.

That's what I've found, anyway.

Can't help thinking that someone's going to get the wrong end of the stick with what I've just written, but hey-ho.
