My local photo group is featured in this week’s Amateur Photographer magazine which is nice, however my local shop has recently stopped selling it and in fact there were no photo magazines on display at all. Spoiled for choice though if you like guns and cars.

Well done to Local Club! Not so well done to Local Shop.
Best regards, John

or porn.... or lads mags...

Congrats on you club being featured, ours was a few months ago. We don't have many choices in Richmond where to go to buy AP and I have to find an excuse to walk all the way to WHS to get at copy. Usually I'd buy a Digital SLR photography as well as an AP if it was worth buying. Now that that Digital SLR photography and Practical Photography are no more the choices on the shelves are limited to copy paste versions of Digital Camera (some months good, some months poor)

In my neck of the woods the best place to buy photographic magazines are the supermarkets.
I ditched AP some time ago as I was fed up with re-hashed articles and the boringly regular Pentax is doomed comments.
I now buy Outdoor Photography and Black and White Photography. Both are printed monthly and are available at Tescos along with your meat and veg!!!

Seeing as only one copy had been delivered to the large W H Smiths in Stratford, whereas they normally get a few, I wrote to the editor: Nigel Atherton replied requesting details of the shops so I responded and hopefully normal service will be resumed. I still rarely buy it but it's nice to have the option!

Update: my letter to the AP editor seems to have worked, my local newsagent is stocking the mag again albeit one copy per week. The shop manager said that when people stop buying then the mags get dropped so I have shot myself in the foot rather, I will have to keep buying one now! Which is a pain because there is little of interest to me and I get it free online from the library but I would hate to see it disappear.

Well done to you and the editor.

But the problem is that if everyone looks at it for free, it will have to rely entirely on advertising to make any money (which I suspect is largely the case now anyway). This inevitably impacts editorial independence, where the largest advertisers always get the best reviews

Whilst I get magazines for free through the library I expect that the online service they use pays something to the publishers, which the library service absorbs within their budget. As you expect editors vehemently deny any bias in favour of advertisers and to be fair any "editorial" prepared with or by a manufacturer is titled accordingly.
