Cicada

Took this one last week in Sandwich Mass. Cicadas are only out every 17 years and boy are they noisy. lol

As always let me know what you think good/bad/indifferant and why ..

Cicada's are great subjects for macro photography, not least because they are difficult to find. You can hear 'em . . . 'til you get close.

OK, the pic. The leaf at front left appears to have moved during exposure. Was it windy?

The cicada is not actually in focus. A golden rule (which can be broken) is to get the eye(s) in focus.

Your plane of focus seems to be a bit short, cutting across its right front leg. The wings too are out of focus.

You might have got a better shot if you'd used a diffused flash to illuminate it, and freeze the action of the wind (if it was windy). You could then have used a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field a little.

I do like the composition, but there does seem to be some blur there. I can't see the EXIF data on it, but you might want to open it in PhotoME (or similar) and check the "SR Result" field. It could be that SR wasn't locked when you took the picture (you have to wait for the hand to appear in the VF).

Yep it was windy.. The pic was a crop from a picture that was from further away. As you say very difficult to get them close up. ...
No chance for me to get them soon tho as im back in my home country of Scotland. Was in Massachusetts on holiday ...
