I think she might be disappointed by all of them. They are so difficult to use compared with a dslr. I suspect, but may be totally wrong, that the M ones are the cheapest and have plastic bodies.

W60 would be useful for its water resistance, so would complement her DSLR in rough conditions.

Hyram,
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO
I have had enough battles with that company over the past few years (not photographic products) ... and they are blacklisted.

Then I'll suggest a company beginning with C
Their compacts are pretty good, some are astounding.

I would have suggested the "other" P too, but as they're blacklisted how about Ricoh? They make some nice (if a little quirky) compacts.

I just bought a samsung d(s)760 for one of the kids, 7.2mp seems like a solid performer, $69.00 cdn
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

The W60 has a lens that zooms out wider than all the others, so it could be interesting for that reason even if the waterproof qualities were not needed.
As for compact cameras being harder to use than SLRs: well, it's harder to put an SLR in your pocket! I'm sure one of the Optios would make a nice present.

The W60 is on MY shopping list ... the K20D may be weather sealed but not quite good enough for a dip in the Indian Ocean.
Still not sure which one - the V20 is currently "half price" £139 from £279 in most places.
Anyone have any ideas what the letters stand for?

The letters are a mystery to me. I would just study the spec and find reviews for each invidual model. That could take some time, I know.

Which would you suggest? I am reasonably brand loyal and may prefer a Pentax, but would consider others.
Also, the current range is:
* Optio M60
* Optio E60
* Optio W60
* Optio V20
* Optio M50
* Optio A40
* Optio S12
I know the W indicates Waterproof, but what do the other letters: M, E, V. A & S stand for?
