Chipped lens element

Was just looking at my new 18-135 WR today and I noticed that one the elements inside the front glass looks like it's chipped. The front element is mint.

The lens was bought new about a month ago from a Pentax Pro centre and only been used 2/3 times and has not suffered any knocks or falls.

What should I do? Contact Pentax UK or the retailer?

The question is whether it has any effect on the image quality. If it doesn't then they may be able to claim that it is not a fault. Is the chip in the centre or at the edge and how big is it?

But the fact that you have had it a month means you may have been deemed to have "accepted" it.

But see what the shop say first.

It's in the centre, about 5 mm.

Accepted it ??? It was not there previously and has developed recently. ( also noticed condensation inside, but I presume that's more to do with the current weather)

If it's a WR lens there surely shouldn't be condensation inside? Or is the pathway for the aperture lever not sealed?

Take it back and complain, there is clearly a manufacturing fault.

I'm sending it back for repair. It's only about a month old. Should I accept this or request a replacement?

I would want a replacement. I believe if its under a month old then you are entitled.

I can't see how they'd justify not replacing/ refunding, that chip's horrendous. The condensation may be due to moisture getting in when you zoom the lens, I guess the weather sealing makes it hard for humidity to escape as well as get in. Leave it in a dry place with the rear cap off.

It's not on the front element, it's inside

According to the consumer act. The sale item has to be fit for purpose, if it isn't then you are entitled to a replacement or refund. Don't let the retailer fob you off by telling you that it is a manufacturers problem. They sold it therefore they are responsible. afterall if you bought something off this forum and it was faulty you would not be expected to send it back to the manufacturer would you? Same thing applys with retailers.

I did type quite a long reply to your losing faith in Pentax thread but it got locked before I hit add comment and I really can't be bothered to do it all again.

I can't actually see a duplicate thread?
