Chinook Low Pass

A noisy visitor this afternoon.
(To my place of work rather than my home).

Wonderful how you got the whole Chinook in the frame with the first photo.
I believe it would have been better if you also had the whole thing in the second shot as well but that shot is wonderfully sharp, you can even see the people inside clearly.

It got a lot closer than I had anticipated when I opted to use the 200/4.

Both great shots, I actually like the tight crop as the blades add little interest to the picture and it allows the fuselage to be larger in the image. Diagonal lines give a sense of movement and the grey sky suits the subject really well. Looks like 1/500th sec?
I think the same Wokka was at my place of work this afternoon around 4pm refueling.

Yep, nice shots there, very sharp - good effort.

Just as I was looking at this picture, they just annouched 1 of these had just been shot down in Helmand.
But on a more postive note, this is a really good picture. No 1 for me.

PeteL - It was 1/750th at f8 (ISO 200)... he wasn't hanging about! He was bound for the Kingdom, where I too used to work (back in 2000).

pschlute - The M 200 certainly represents the best £63.50 I ever spent! I bought it new in 1986 and have loved it ever since.

PR - You drew that latest loss to my attention: it was very lucky nobody was hurt for once.

We frequently get Chinooks in for hot refueling. Unfortunately we are`nt allowed to use Camera`s at our workplace.
Last year i was just nipping a few miles down the road from home and for the first time ever i left my Camera behind. What a mistake!!! A couple of dots on the horizon turned into a Chinook with a Seaking as an underslung load!!! I frantically tried to get home to grab my kit but by then it had landed and i was unable to get a shot. When the R A F first took delivery of them they were assembled at Liverpool dock and flown to Shawbury in Shropshire, They would take staff up for a spin (80 at a time!) but i did`nt fancy any of that!I preferred the relative comfort of the Gazelle or Wessex.
I too have an old 200 f4, Its a lovely lens though mine refuses to focus at infinity which is a bit limiting. The M 100 f2.8 is a beauty too but my favourite is the 300 f4 which is still one of my most used lenses, (I have even used it to shoot video on my K7.)

PeteL, I think a 300/4 is - at the moment - next on my wish list. I toyed with the idea of the DA* but went for the 50-135 and an MoT instead!
We're a bit more relaxed about cameras out here, but I find that the few days I decide not to take mine with me are the days when unexpected diversions crop up. I've never seen a helicopter with another helicopter underslung: that would be quite a sight! Cheers.
