Great theme you've stumbled onto Derek...I really like them...fancy trying it myself. I actually rate No.4...like the long receding line of pawns starting from an OOF foreground into "Infinity and Beyond..."

Very stylish results and sophisticated looking lighting! The low angles complement things very well also...... Great stuff

Cheers guys, it was an enjoyable little experiment.
The setup was really basic.
Led sensor light sitting on the floor, a bin and a coffee table to hold a piece of mdf that i had rebated to hold the glass chess board, and a black sheet under the glass but over the board. Light fall off did the rest.

Cool. Reminds me of the matrix, like an about to launch into battle scene from a movie.
I'm seeing a lot of grain here, was that a processing choice, or is this ISO noise from capture?

The simple approach often produces the best results - excellent name you finally came up with: "Kings Cross".

Cheers Richard. Probably from pp. I had to push it a fair bit as images were a bit flat and the light not quite strong enough. Cool. Reminds me of the matrix, like an about to launch into battle scene from a movie.

A couple of shots of a game set that I found while clearing out one of the spare rooms.
K3ii + petri 28mm f2 and 15mm ltd.
Single light source, handheld.
Just messing about really.
Will probably add a few more later.

Great set. For playing i always prefer the traditional wooden Staunton sets, but yours are clearly better for photography.
