Catch in focus with K-r

Did you remember to also manually focus on the spot you wanted to take the picture? When the subject arrives at that spot the AF system thiks it's in focus and the shutter should release.

Thanks for the quick reply, I've just had another try and got it to work, it doesn't work how I thought it would I thought it would auto focus didn't realise I had to manual focus as well

As far as I'm aware catch in focus will only work with a non AF lens, when a non AF lens is mounted the AF drive pin on the body mount is pushed back into the camera and disengages, with an AF lens it will still be engaged and trying to focus the lens regardless of what switches are set on the lens itself.
Switch your lens to MF mode if you have an AF/MF lens.

I have a recollection that I've used this with manual focus only lenses by pointing at the subject with shutter down then changing the focus till the shutter fires. (When it has focused)

SHOOT IN CATCH-IN FOCUS MODE.
When (20. catch-in focus) in the (C custom setting 3) menu (p.90) is set to (on), if (AF mode) is set to AF.A or AF.S and one of the following types of lenses is attached . catch-in focus shooting is enabled and the shutter is released automaticly when the subject comes into focus.

MANUAL FOCUS LENS.
DA OR FA LENS that has an AF and MF setting on the lens (the setting on the lens must be set to MF before shooting)
HOW TO TAKE PICTURES
1 Attach a proper lens to the camera.
2 Set the focus mode lever to AF.(THE ONE ON THE CAMERA BODY NOT ON THE LENS)
3 Set (AF mode) to AF.A or AF.S.
4 Set the focus on a position the subject will pass.
5 Press the shutter release button fully.
the shutter is released automaticlly when the subject comes into focus at the set position.
So if you have a manual lens your ok other wise you will need prime or special lenses, kit lenses wont work and neither will the 35mm or the 55/300.

Thanks for raising this topic again Dave, I just checked this with my 50-135 and it does indeed allow the use of catch in focus, unfortunately the MF setting on my Sigma 50-500 doesn't, the motor in the camera body continues to operate, it would be interesting to know if any of the newer third party lenses will work if set to MF.

Just tried it on my Sigma 50-150mm HSM and it works fine, not so with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 or non OS 50-500mm.it would be interesting to know if any of the newer third party lenses will work if set to MF.
Guessing it's only HSM models for Sigma ... no doubt a 150-500mm or 50-500mm OS user can verify.

yeah tried that on k7 with mf 50mm, everytime it takes photo it is out of focus, so maybe needs micro adjustments to AF?

1. Menu -> Custom 3 -> Item 20 "Catch in Focus" -> Toggle On.
2. Pop your camera to AF mode.
3. Switch your lens to MF mode if you have an AF/MF lens.
4. Switch your AF mode to AF-S.
5. Compose your photo where you predict your subject will be.
6. Press the button, hold and wait for the subject to come into the frame.
7. Camera fires when in focus.
