Catch in focus or trap focus.
#1: manual A lenses only
#2: set af selector to AF-S
#3: set drive selector to single frame
#4: focus in front or behind desired focus point.
#5: push shutter button all the way and keep it there.(nothing should happen)
#6: very slowly focus towards desired focus point. When focus is achieved, shutter should go of automatic.

That's it,

Martin.
Best regards,

Martin.

Ok

I use the K10 and this is how I can use it:

Manual focus lens only.

Set camera to AF-S

Press and hold shutter button, and slowly turn the focus ring.

When the camera aurofucus system thinks the image is in focus, the green hexagon will appear and allow the shutter to release.

Now your camera might be different, as I know the K20 has a menu item for this, presumably to enable this to be used with autofocus lenses too. Perhaps someone with a K200 can answer.

Again not a K200 but it works for my K100d Super

With Manual Focus lens set camera for AF.
Fully press and hold Shutter Release.
turn focus ring until shutter operates.

I see from the online manual that, like the K20D, the K200D also has an option for Catch-in focus in the Custom menu. This is turned off by default. Set it to On to use the feature.

Having tried this on my K200D, I can confirm that the procedure works!

You have to enable the Catch-in focus in the Custom menu, and it works for manual-focus lenses only.
Best regards

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am having some issues with trap focus.

It works brilliantly on my Pentax M 135mm - in either M or Av settings, but doesn't work at all on manual M42 lenses with adapter. Why is this? The M 135 has no electrical contacts, so how does the camera know which lens is mounted?!

M42 lenses are so small, they don't touch the contacts. There needs to be contact to activate catch focus. There is a trick with some alu-foil to shorten the contacts. But that is camera depended.

Yeah, as Martin said, the M lenses work because the metal flange of the PK mount shorts the contacts. Most M42 lenses don't have anything metallic there, so unless you use a flanged M42-Pk adapter (and lose infinity focus) you need to short them with foil or something similar.

I have read in several places that I need to short one particular contact (the one next to the screw), but since the M lens flange apparently shorts all of the contacts at once I'm guessing that bit of advice isn't quite accurate.

You have to enable the Catch-in focus in the Custom menu, and it works for manual-focus lenses only.
It also works with SDM lenses having a manual focus switch on the lens body set to "OFF".

When you have a subject moving toward (or away from) you, you can set your focus ahead of the subject, and hold the shutter till your subject crosses the focus point.
