My first "Cat Portraits" ..... well we couldn't get him out of the room, so decided she might as well hold him

I've been experimenting with the lights in the small space available in the living room, and have made more seperation from the black curtains with a backlight, one flash in a softbox on the floor behind. The main light is a shoot-through white umbrella.

Thanks for your views and thoughts

Nice portraits Nigel.. People who don't light their own images don't understand the pitfalls that come with this type of photography.. I'm being picky now but i find your backlight on the left a little too strong for my taste. But that's about all. You've done well. Especially with the black background keeping it black, in a small space with a shoot through umbrella. They are a relatively cheap solution but chuck light everywhere...

Well done...!!

Thanks Stuart ..... Just glad I've got a solution to the problems I was having in that small space. By zooming in I can eliminate the areas with light spill, and I kept the subject further away from the curtains.

The other thing to do Nigel is to start playing with flags, I use sheets of Polystyrene sheeting, painted matt black one side and left white the other, then they can be used as a soft reflector of a flag depending on what's required, plus they are lightweight and fairly cheap, then stored in the garage roof when not needed.

I like these, I am always amazed with what can be done with flash, in the right hands.
Great models too
I know what i like, If not always why.

Thanks guys .....

Chris, my flags have been limited so far to on-camera work only. I'm not sure about a practical application with off camera flashes. Have you you any photos showing them in use? I had my shoot through brolly up very close, only just out of frame, but fortunately the curtains seem to have absorbed the light spill ..... The grey carpet floor was a problem though, and some shots from the shoot will need a little clone work to replace bits of carpet with curtains !

Morning Nigel,

I don't have any images of them in use unfortunately and generally its been with studio flash rather than speedlights, but the principals the same, just to mask off stray light or use to absorb additional light not requitre.

The last time I used them, was on the Strawberry images shots a month or so ago and posted on here, which I think you commented on.

Thanks Chris, good for close-ups then, to mask off the light from the surrounds....

Here's another one from the same shoot, hot off the press...
