Fantastic shot!
Only one problem, they're not caterpillars (lepidoptera) as such, they're sawfly larvae. In particular, the larvae of Croesus septentrionalis. They typically feast on hazel and birch (that looks like birch to me).

Whatever they are, the picture is fantastic. Nice collection.

Thanks for that Jonathan, I figured someone might know what they were! And you're right on the money, they're munching a silver birch sapling I potted up last year. Are they a pest? - or should I leave them alone!?

Pest. Some of them can decimate trees.

I think I would take them off while you still have the folage LOL. Cracking good photos though.

Amazing shot. Did you train those larvae to eat in formation?

Strange creatures, they even moved (waved their back ends!) in unison - I guess it's some kind of "strength in numbers" or "confuse the enemy" sort of thing!?Amazing shot. Did you train those larvae to eat in formation?

Sounds reasonable, would make them look as if they were part of the plant...
Very strange, good shots!
