This magnificent flightless bird lives in the northern rainforest, the horn on the head is used for charging through the scrub and the feet are the weapons if needed

this one was on the beach looking for a feed as the rainforest is still in bad shape after the cyclone.

A protected bird in decline sad to say.
C&C welcome.

I've never seen anything like that before
Not a very pretty bird with that lump on it's head and it
looks to have fur rather than feathers
The shots are well exposed considering the lighting.

If anyone didn't believe that birds are descended from dinosaurs this looks like proof to me

That really does look like fur, how weird!

Nice shots of an extraordinary subject. I like the second especially. How close did you get - he looks like he could be a pretty scary chap! (like a proper dinosaur...)

Probably about 3feet away, just used the sigma 17-70 as this was just a beach trip and the bird was unexpected

Amazing bird / dinosaur / thing! You were brave getting so close, it looks like it wouldn't think twice about disembowelling you with its claw...

It's a shame they are indecline as it looks like one hell of a meal

Nice shots especially as it was a chance discovery

Now it is no secret that I am no bird expert but that one appears to have no wings whilst you mention it is flightless are there wings hiding under that hefty coat of fur like feathers? or maybe it is fur
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.

There is a very small wing under those feathers.
