Dave, I think you have missed the boat this year have a look at the rod caught fish table 8..Link
Thanks for looking that up Doik.Dave, I think you have missed the boat this year have a look at the rod caught fish table 8..Link
However I am game to have a look.
As Polchraine said the general time for the upper reaches of the river Ribble is Mid Oct - mid November. On the same river lower down at Paythorne near Clitheroe the Sunday nearest the 20th November is traditonally known as Salmon Sunday. People pack onto the bridge over the river to watch the spectacle and then have lunch in the pub. (Fish and chips)
I have also checked some wildlife records (2007) and salmon were reported to be leaping around this time at these falls.

If it's that good can I come and do a little poaching - maybe a net, 240v generator and a couple of cables! A well proven method and best used in the closed season!

Just trying to help. I have been fishing for over fifty years the last forty on the lower and middle stretches of the river Wear. I was told the fish were streaming through Durham on the 26th Oct but they did not hang around. I must say I prefer to catch sea trout as they splash and leap out of the water on contact. Now that's the photo to get.
Good luck with your project.

I appreciate your help. Luckily the site is only about 40 minutes away and it is superb walking country. My turty hound always needs a very long walk.
Now where can I see the sea trout? I can see lots of challenges starting to develop.

Any more suggestions gratefully received.
Sit for half an hour or so and see if there's one spot that they jump up more than any others, or at least a regular leaping point. Then, pre-focus, set your exposure manually, camera on tripod, use a remote release (so that you're not trying to look through the viewfinder and shoot when they come into view - you'll be too late ), it might be an idea to use a bit of fill-in flash too, depending what the light's like.Any more suggestions gratefully received.
And have fun.
Good luck!

ok feedback time.
I have visited the site on Sunday when it was not raining as hard. There were fish under the surface, but nothing leaping out. one or two made a splash as we looked the other way.
Still the site is easily acccessible and should catch the light on a good day! I am planning to go back next year - its in the new diary.
Thanks for all your help
Dave

John - how did you know i was sitting eating kitkat in the rain?
James - It will be October 2010 now before the fish start acrobatics. But the that area of the Yorkshire dales around penygent is always worth a visit.

Dave, When you said you missed a couple, the KitKat advert came to mind.
Here is a LINK you may find of interest.
I find it hard to believe it took two years to get the shot on the best salmon river in the country.
I had two KitKat moments last night, a few members of our club met up in Durham for a night of photography. I took my Ist D and two sets of batteries, the ones that hold their charge for a year??.I did not get a dozen pics before I had two sets of flat batteries. I enjoyed the walk and it was not raining.

Wow - did you catch that one ? If so was it on the fly as that would have been a killer to land on fly rod and line
When I fish I cheat - its called 2.5 / 3lb test curve rods, safety bolt rigs, baitrunners and bite alarms - just sit back and wait for that big old carp to do all the hard work for you
As for carp - the lazy way! After a day in the river after salmon and sea trout, I am normally exhausted and after 6 days have lost weight and need a holiday!
