Nathan, what's got into you lately? The 'duh' above is totally unnecessary. You did invite comments, right?

Your image is too dark for my tastes too. Were you experimenting with a different light source? LED light perhaps?

A hard photo to comment on for me really. Yes It's dark, but that is inherent in this shot imo. Looks like you were experimenting with a different light source, It's clever how you have done that imo.So Nathan, what was your objective in composing this shot? and do you think you achieved your objectives? just out of interest what were the camera settings for this shot.

Hi Nathan

Considering the high standards of your usual work I find this rather suprising, as unfortunately for me I find it rather dull and unispiring not to your usual standard I may add.

Comment 1: 90% of communication is non-verbal, 100% of forum communication is verbal. I think probably the little spat between Peter and Nathan would not have occurred if they had been face-to-face. I also thought Nathan was a bit rude, although this was clearly not his intention. We all need to be mindful of this...

Comment 2: doesn't work for me, but might have if all of the base was lit up. At the moment it looks incomplete. I think this is worth a bit more experimentation, though.

Playing with light witout the light = flame.
It is interesting how it glows as if from inside the candle.

Still the photo is lacking.
Maybe some light on the table...or the source of the light(or hint about it)...etc may give more to the photo. So that somekind of directions or composition will be more obvious.
Or some remains of the smoke...

PS. seemes to be too much black on the photo. Is there need for so much especially bottom. (I have bad screen at the moment. At my job)

Edit: PS.

I think the shot is technically well done. You've controlled noise surprisingly well. However the lighting looks a bit odd given the lack of a flame. The light is also the wrong colour in my opinion - too cold.

You're lighting the middle section of the candle, with a torch it appears. Why not just light the candle?

I think another possible interesting effect would be to photograph the lit candle, and then remove the flame in PP. I think this might have been the effect you were going for? Candlelight but without the flame, am I right?
