Hi I am in a bit of a delemma at the moment. One of my photo's which I titled heaven has been chosen by the London photo gallery to exhibit.

They want me to send the image at 300 dpi high res JPEG (2-3 MB).

The thing is I don't know how to make it 300 dpi as I did it in a programme called Picture monkey which compressed it a bit.

Please can you tell me how I can get the resolution to 300 dpi? I am thrilled it has been chosen, but I am now worried i am going to miss out as per usuel becauseof my stupid lack of knowledge.

I have to get it to them by the 18th of October.

Can you advise me please?

Hi

Congratulations

Do you use Lightroom or Photoshop?

When I export my photos from Lightroom I have the option of choosing my DPI

Hi back ...
If you had PS Elements, the easy way is to resize, and maybe do it twice.
First you go to Image>Resize>300dpi.
Then frantically hit Ctrl+- to get it down to a reasonable sie on the screen.
Then do Image>resize, and adjust the pixel size to whatever they want.
Picturemonkey I do not know, but it may have similar options
Alternatively, you could download GIMP as a free package from the 'net and use it like it was Elements (it was supposed to be a free equivalent to Photoshop.
Second alternative is a free program from Serif (but you may have to listen to 20 minutes of sales pitch before they give you an unlock code.
Third alternative is that you email it to someone who can do it quickly and they mail it back to you in time.
I hope you get lots of offers for this - but if you don't, you can PM me for my e-mail address, and I will do it either tonight or tomorrow.
So, you do have some options.

Can I just check why you can't just send the original file?
Typically they want the best they can get, especially if it's going to be printed.

By 'original', do you mean a camera JPEG unedited or resized? I assumed that Louise had made some edits to the 'original' in Picture Monkey and that programme had saved out a resized version ....? We may never know if it has overwritten the 'original' or the original is still intact somewhere.

Louise, can you confirm that you have made some edits and that the version you want to send must be the one you saved from Picture Monkey? If so, then maybe the compression is not too much and you can re-create a new version at 300dpi.

I think I would avoid trying any new programmes at this stage .... when you are under pressure is not a good time to try something new. I would take up any offers from members here to carry out the resizing for you. I suggest also that you post the details of the gallery's requirements here ....DPI, size details etc ... everything they have written down, so that we can see exactly whats needed.

Also, lets see what your file is like now ..... right-click the file in Windows Explorer, choose Properties, then click on the 'details' tab .... a little bit down you will see the figures for size and resolution. Would you please post these details here also, as well as the current file size in Mb ..... this information will help us to know if the resizing operation can be done with no quality loss.

It should already be 300 dpi off the camera

To check (and fix) .....

Download the FREE FastStone Viewer v5.5
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Install and view your file.

Copy the file first to a Temp Folder say C:TempPics

Open the folder in FastStone Viewer. Select the photo file.

It will show the Preview of the photo in the lower left corner.
Select the Preview with your mouse.
Right Click on the Preview
Select "Image Properties (Exif)" on the popup menu.

8th line down it shows the Image size and DPI

If it's not 300 x 300 Click the small DPI Box and
Set DPI ........ Just change the two values.
Click OK

It doesn't ask if you want to SAVE.....To check it's done....

Select "Image Properties (Exif)" on the popup menu AGAIN
It should show 300 x 300 Ignore the Print Size.

The file size should be unchanged. If it's too big Resize/Resample in FastStone changing only the Pixel Size (reduce them).

This hints at what I was getting at.

Resolution = Pixels by Pixels.

DPI = Dots Per Inch.

DPI refers to how large the image will print out, but it's a particularly arbitrary figure most of the time.
eg-

1000px by 1000px image at 300dpi is a1000px by 1000px image.

1000px by 1000px image at 72dpi is a 1000px by 1000px image.

I should have mentioned that another way of reducing the file size to 2-3MB would have been to re-save with a lower JPG Quality setting. This leaves the pixel size the same. They don't seem to have specified a pixel size though.

No that’s the problem. My PC isn’t strong enough to take it. When I upgrade to 64 bit then I will get it, lack of funds at the mo.

Thanks that’s very kind of you. I’m worried they will refuse and give it to another more professional photographer which will be really disappointing.

I guess it’s compressed and small which is what Picture monkey does when I edit photos on there.

Camera Jpeg resized by picture monkey, usually without telling anyone.

Love to but unsure how to do this.

Here goes:

It's already 300 DPI so that's OK.

If 399 x 600 pixels isn't BIG enough you won't be able to make it any bigger without a big loss in quality. In which case re-editing the original is the only choice.

to send a PM either click on the name of the person you wish to PM to get their profile - then click on send message, or right click on your name/avatar top right and choose my messages from the drop down menu.

Can you not buy an older version of Photoshop Elements (maybe version 9) . It doesn't require a powerful computer,or a 64 bit processor. You can probably get one really cheaply if you do a bit of searching. It may not help with your current problem but will help with future editing, and it will do pretty much everything you are likely to need to do.

There is loads of information online on using PSE, and plenty of books out there, all version specific.

It is a stripped down version of full Photoshop, so you can use it as a RAW converter, adjust levels, lighting, colour, resize, straighten, make panorama, clone out things, in short it is a full on photo processing program. Have a look online. The newest version (14) costs 65.99 at Amazon, and is probably less elsewhere, the earlier version are undoubtedly available online somewhere - or maybe someone on the forum has a full copy they no longer use and are willing to sell. Make sure if it is secondhand that they have de registered it, or you won't be able to use it.

Oh and you get a good photo organiser too.

I'd still suggest that thinking about a new editing programme is best left to later, when the pressures off for getting this photo sorted out by the 18th ...

There's two key questions now ....1) are the edits or changes you made to the look of the image in ' Photo Monkey ' important creatively and HAVE to be kept ... ?

2) Do you have an original file from the camera still saved ... On your computer or on the SD Card ...?

If you have the original, then my suggestion is this ... Send the original AND your edited version to a member and get that person to edit the original to look mostly like your edited version, but saved at full size, 2-3M.b etc as specified.

As far as the edited version goes, it's difficult from here to know exactly what's happened ... The small size in dimensions suggests to me that it was cropped massively ?
