Try getting a replacement or refund from the retailer you bought the camera from. If you and they are in the UK, they arguably have a legal obligation to do that for a camera that is only six months old under the Sale of Goods Act.
If the dealer doesn't co-operate, I would send it off to Pentax and buy a second-hand old Optio off eBay to use in the meantime.
Sorry I can't think of a technical solution to the fault. Sadly, it is rarely possible or economical to fix compact cameras.

I bought an Optio S way back in 2003 and had it till last summer when I cracked the screen. It was so great I thought I would replace it with another.
I got an Optio S10 in the summer however after using it for a few occasions it now it has a fault. Alot of the time when I turn it on its as if it crashes. The green on light comes on but the lens will not pop out or the LCD come on. The green light will then stay on permanatly even when I try to turn the camera off. The only way I can rectify the situation is by taking the battery out.
When I replace the battery alot of the time the problem repeats itself. However in about 1 in 5 the camera will turn on and lens pop out e.t.c as normal. It seems completely random. It is under warranty but the chances of me sending it off and getting it back before christmas are probably not that great. Does anyone have any ideas?
Kind regards
