camera / shatter shake

Hi all well about 3 weeks into owning the ist D and loving it a few questions is it just me or is camera / shatter shake more noticable will digital also with film when you take for example a water fall and you like to slow the shatter speed down to get the nice smokey look, well when i do that now the pic come out way over exposed i know there was a fair amount of lee way when using film so how do you do it with the digital with out the great over exposer : thanks all cheers

I think you might be asking a couple of questions at once!

To get the smooth water look on a waterfall, you need to slow the shutter speed right down. To get a correct exposure, the aperture will have to go a corresponding amount smaller (ie larger number).

Here's the easiest way on the *istD: use the P mode, and wind the thumb dial to the right so you get Av22 shown on the top LCD. Make sure you are set to ISO200

The only snag with digital is the ISO starts at 200. If you need to get slower exposures still (because it's too bright and even f22 doesn't get slow enough), then you will need a Neutral Density filter which cuts down the light entering the lens. So a 2-stop ND filter will give you effectively ISO50, and will give you shutter speeds four times longer. A 4-stop ND will give eight times longer shutter speeds.

The exposure lattitude of digital sensors is more like that of transparency (slide) film than print film so if you are most used to the latter you will need to adjust the way you work somewhat.
