I can't help feeling an ND filter or two would be cheaper than two CPLs!
But if anyone would care to try it I'll be happy to see the results.

If you're nervous about it you can buy these pre-built Just Google variable ND filter. Singh Ray do an expensive one, but there are also cheapo ebay ones around.

If I may chime in, I tried this, but it depends amazingly on the quality of the PL filters as at maximum density, any colour cast of the filters becomes very amplified.
I spent about £70 on the PLs and still got a ruddy/brown cast. I changed it for two Tiffen Titanium 1.2 ND filters and get about the same density but zero cast.

A more constructive(?) way to use 2 polarising filters is to place between 2 said filters an object of clear, moulded plastic. Contra-rotate the filters until cross-polarisation occurs.
Then will be revealed stress patterns formed within the object during the moulding process.
It's Fun!!
