No I had never come across one before but I found it on a British Beetle identification website, so they must be fairly common.

We get lots of these around the last two weeks in May. They start off life as the chafer grub, a very fat large maggot ! Then spend all their time trying to fly through the kitchen windows in the evening.
The grub can live under the lawn and eat the grass roots causing yellowing/dead grass.
