Broken filter thread

Hey,

I was walking around, and my lens got side swiped by a passer by. Usually nothing special, but this time cap flew off with half the filter thread.
So now I have only half (200 or so degrees) of the thread.

I doubt I can buy these separately, so any ideas how to fix this?

Current ideas:
49mm filter, deglassed and some electrical tape to ensure good fit; and to cover the nasty gap.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

It sounds like quite a swipe...which lens is this?

I'd be looking at an insurance claim I think.
Best regards, John

My K series 50/1.4 and 55/1.8 both have dented filter threads which I've bent roughly into place but they're not smooth. I took old 52mm filters, removed the glass and screwed them on to the lenses, maybe with a bit of superglue just to be sure they stay on.

You could do that, but these are old lenses, I'm not sure I'd do that with an expensive lens, I'd probably get it fixed. As John says, your insurance may cover it.

The lens isn't an expensive one, a F 50mm f1.7. Oldie, but an awesome 50mm

Talking about insurance, you reminded me that I have all my gear insured, I had completely forgotten about that.

Checked the papers, and £50 excess, so can hardly see the point tbh.

Can just as well stick a filter ring, glue it in and tape it. Less hassle, and no wondering later why my insurance premium goes up.

If you decide to glue a ring in I would recommend Loctite 330 Multibond, not the cheapest stuff out there but it will be a really strong "repair". (..and no need for tape)

That's a superb lens, and a replacement is around £300, the nearest being the FA 50mm f/1.4, so it may be very worthwhile making a claim.

You are absolutely right, the lens is superb and mint. This one sits on the K5 almost permanently.
But it's insured under the "Other gear" category, so max value is £100. So the £50 excess hits very badly in this case.

I think I will fix it myself this time, and be more careful in the future. The Loctite sounds good, will use that one!

That said,

Does anyone know if me claiming this on insurance, (I mean it is covered and legit claim) would increase my premium when I get a new policy?

Ouch. John's right, it's a superb lens and no longer made. If it doesn't affect your premium, I'd pay the 50 quid if that's all there is to it, but it sounds like the max value they'll pay out is 100, correct?

Do you still have the broken piece of filter thread? If so, I think I'd (very carefully) glue it back on with the strongest glue available.

Another option would be a new lens, I think there are a couple for sale at the moment of the forums.

How about just buying a decent clear filter and permanently gluing it in. That should give you the full thread the other side and bonus lens protection.

Or even buying the cheapest clear filter you can find with threads both sides, hammering out the glass and gluing just that in

Hey,
yeah I presume it should be about £100 the maximum that they would pay, as not a single item in the category can be more than £100.

It broke into two, and then went missing, so best restoration is by using a filter.

@nass Yep, I don't like adding glass to my lenses if not necessary, so deglassed filter is the way to go for me by the looks of it.

Thanks for all the great advice and thoughts!

Hi I don't post very often, but would put a 'step up' ring from 49 - 52mm on and change the lens cap to suit

Yeah, step, up would do the trick as well. Just that I have unused 49mm filter rings lying around so cheaper.
