brightness level on Imac for photoshop elements 8

Having recently printed a photo of mine and being bitterly disappointed by the underexposure i have come to the conclusion that my brightness level on my imac may be to high. As a general rule what brightness levels should we be using for photoshop element on mac. Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Scroll to the bottom of this page. There is a grey scale (16 steps) and you should be able to see all 16 gradations.

It's a first step.
