Black line on photos

Sorry to be a pest but I'm wondering if any of you kind people out there can tell me why I sometimes get a black stripe down the right hand side of my pictures.

It's not a major problem just a tad annoying having to crop it off and I sometimes forget and it doesn't look very nice.

I used to get something very similar on my old film camera when I tried using a flash and a shutter speed faster than 1/180.

So I suspect it is maybe something to do with the shutter.

Only the shutter doesn't move from right to left but from up and down.

The strange thing is that you only get it some time... i can't think of something but if i should suggest something vague then it's probably the sensor acting up...
Contact Pentax and see what they say.

Could be software related. Do you get it with both RAW and jpeg? Have you tried other photoviewers?

I am under the impression that digital cameras do not have shutters, if that is true it cannot be a shutter problem so, it must be a software problem?

Your comment that I only get it sometimes started me thinking - so I tried different lenses but it still happened. Then Alan mentioned other photoviewers and bingo - that's why I only get it sometimes.

Picasa shows this black line in the photo viewer and when I upload to straight to picasa - I've just tried going straight to PhotoShop and no black line so that's obviously why it happens sometimes and not others.

I don't understand why picasa is adding a black line down the side though - but not a problem I shan't use it anymore.

Point and shoot compact digital cameras don't have shutters, but Digital SLR's do, for now at least.

I've also learnt today that the shutter moves vertically, whether I remember is another matter

This is a software issue. The editor is not interpreting the photo correctly. It isn't a fault and will go away in time (once the photo editor codecs are updated)

Charlene, does it happen for JPGs as well as RAW (DNG or PEF)? I have some pink lines on the right in Picasa for the K-5 DNGs. On the up side Picasa shows a little more of the frame on the sides than with Silkypix (the standard RAW converter I use).

I don't know I haven't used JPG's for a while now - it didn't the last time I uploaded JPG's though.

I can't use PEF with picasa because it doesn't recognise the prefix and makes the pictures go peculiar colours so I was saving in DNG.

Annoying really because picasa visionaire gives a chance to review and delete without uploading the whole content of the card to the computer.

Ok, I see. So it seems to be the same thing, really, only for two different cameras.
DNG is an intricate format and it seems that Pentax is putting some of the additional information in the DNG file where Picasa expects image data. This will only be cured when we send some DNG's to them. Have to dig up the address of the guy I had been in contact with when the K20D was new.
