Bigging up the DA17-70

That's a question only you can answer. I was happy to pay around £550 for mine, but I don't think I would pay £700, unless I was earning a banker's wage.

£550 certainly is a better price.
At the moment I don't have the money to ponder about it but the price I named would be at the top limited I want to lay down for it.
Maybe when the finance is a bit more positive I might be lucky to find a second hand one.

The 16-50's problem is the price. You have to really need the weather-sealing and large aperture to justify such a huge premium over the 16-45.

Exactly! I don't think Richard is saying that the 16-50 is optically inferior to the others, though he wasn't very impressed by the wide-open performance. Above 24mm he describes it as stellar.

Optically, there is absolutely no better zoom than the 16-50 above 24mm, in fact it can equal or better the best primes under most conditions. It's just that it's now so expensive!
On a purely personal level, I have mixed feelings about the 16-50 as I find the performance rather unbalanced and I frequently changed the focus instead of zooming, due to the size and placement of the narrow zoom ring. I used one for a couple of months and finally decided it wasn't for me and eventually opted for the DA 17-70 as it was just more universal for my needs, but oh, how I wish it had the wider 16mm field of view and lower barrel distortion of the DA 16-45.

The obvious solution is to buy all three.
