It has been a while!
People did mention that fatherhood would absorb all my free time. Of course I just smiled, nodded and went along with their outlandish claims...
Turns out they were spot on! Wouldn't have it any other way though.

Sorry, I did mean reduce the DoF. Presumably it defocuses the foreground too though?

In response to the OP (and to avoid claims that I'm derailing a thread), I'm struggling to look beyond a G12 lens on a G12 body currently.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Depends where you're focusing really.
"Background defocus mode" just refers to a mode on certain Sony cameras that essentially shoots wide open (albeit with a little software jiggery-pokery).
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

I believe Samsung are working on some kind of synthetic bokeh thing. The camera will apparently have two lenses though! I guess so it can tell what is foreground and what is background.

This is an interesting test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p56vAwK1y70 I guess that is why it is a predominantly "background" defocus. Presumably the Q will do something similar, but have they said for sure how there software bokeh will work?

I think asgr meant to say 'reduce the dof', and is possibly talking about these newer cameras with a 'bokeh' mode.
I think you mean "Background defocus mode"
