Battery Pack on Digital SLR

Sorry, never used an ist D but could it be that you can switch between power sources ie. use the camera batteries and then switch to the battery pack?

I bought a Battery pack for my ist D thinking I would get twice the battery life ( i.e 8 in camera)but I seem to get no additional battery life, I know the unit works as the camera operates without batteries in the main body.
Anyone out there with asimilar issue or problem?
