Banding/ spot

Hi all,

having trouble with my K30 think its the sensor have cleaned it but to no avail see this crop from a recent shot.




So what should I do? its under warranty from SRS but I live in the Czech republic aaarrrggggh???

The only other thing that might cause banding is over-processing of a JPEG file. Basically if too much information is lost boundaries between different brightness levels can become sharp transitions instead of flowing smoothly together.

Sometimes in dark shadow areas sensors can reveal banding where they behave normally at higher light levels.

If it's a fault, then it's back for repair I'm afraid. Perhaps talk to SRS to see what procedure is best?

Thing is I have had quite a lot of banding in skies that I never used to get with my K-r and it is really affecting my landscapes. And I am processing them in the same way ive always done

Sorry, got distracted! I would try updating firmware. Try shooting both RAW and JPEG to see if the problem lies with one or both. Try a different SD card. Make sure the card is formatted in the camera before use.

If all these things fail, then a return to JPS under warranty or for a quote, as apprpriate, seems the likely outcome.

It's covering all bases Dan, sometimes firmware updates cure problems like the one you describe. It might be a known possible fault.

Ideally need a photo of an evenly lit white wall as well, to help

Ok firmware is already the latest version so now the white wall test!

Looks like graphic editor issues to me, not camera.

You can't necessarily carry on editing the same on a 16MP image as a 12MP one. The original crop shows what looks like pretty smooth vignetting, i.e, a lens problem. It then looks like you've edited the jpg and saved it at too high a compression. Graphic editors like PS, PSP etc do vary in how well they manage this and the compression can be changed in them as well.

It's best to use RAW, get the photo as close to how you want it in the raw converter before saving a jpg and only do very minor work on it after, saving at a compression rate that doesn't reduce the file size, or perhaps use TIFF temporarily until finished editing, then save as jpg.

Daniel. Any luck solving this? I have had my K30 for a month and am very frustrated by the banding in clear blue skies. It looks like yours. It's only in jpegs. If I look at the raw version of the same it's not there. Can you alter the amount of JPeg compression? I am shooting on the highest quality setting as it is..... Thanks.
