No Algi, it has always been called at, or commercial at. It is hardly worth abbreviating a two letter word. It appeared on typewriters in the 19th century as soon as they were introduced.

It was used in the first e-mail in 1972, as it would not occur in a person's name or the name of an institution, and because it meant at.

... in German it's a "klammeraffe" - clip ape - but normally, these days, you can get away with "ät"

Whoops, I was thinking of phpBB3.1

Interesting history of the at sign (asperand?) here: http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/whereat.htm

And of course wikipedia has a lengthy entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_sign
Interesting and they both haven't picked up that it's been used in Lotus 123 since 1983 to the present day. It could have also been used in VisiCalc in 1979. I bet Lotus had a name for it?

Wkikepedia is actually wrong, and the ampersand is defined in dictionaries as the symbol & (and)- it is a corruption of the Latin and English combined "and per se and".

Sources: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Chambers's 20th Century Dictionary.

John I think every time I type 'asperand', you read 'ampersand'.

At least it explains why Menzies and Dalziel are pronounced as they are. Maybe they should reintroduce the yogh now less people use a tailed z.
