Dan, I have been doing a bit of research, as now I think I am coming around to thinking I may push the boat out a bit more and buy the 50mm F/1.4 AF after reading the following review on the downside of manual focus:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_getprodrev.php/product_id=3258467/id_type=masterid/
the only downside on the 1.4 compared to the 1.7 is it seems to be a bit 'soft' at F1.4
for your info, Warehouse Express are selling at £169 at the moment too. Would be lovely to catch one secondhand tho'.

And a crazy shallow depth of field where you breath and the focus point changes a bit 'soft' at F1.4
Shooting at f2.4 is beautiful - especially lovely for portraiture. Soft, creamy bokeh - it's absolutely gorgeous!
Sorry to fuel the LBA... but it has a very different rendering to the f1.7. My SMC-F 50/1.7 hasn't seen the light of day for a loooong time

And I was thinking of perhaps the SMC-F 50/1.7, but then Matt says a thing like that...

A 1.7 just went on ebay for £92.00 . Think I'll get myself a new 1.4 for the extra £73.00.
At some point...

that's about normal and the main reason I don't have one. One day I'll spring for the AF 1.4, but I'm not paying £100 just for AF (I have an A series 1.7 already).

With you on that, pay the extra for a newy and faster lens, birthday coming up!
At least it's good to know they hold their value well

Thanks for that! I took this with the manual focus 50mm f/1.7 lens, which I think tends to go for around £40-£50 on ebay. Haven't checked that, could be wrong.
I'm definitely tempted by the autofocus f/1.4 version, that SRS Microsystems have at £165 new. Various other places do them, but that's the best price I've seen. I guess they might come up second hand every so often, but perhaps not, as most owners seem very pleased with them.
As far as the two versions go, there's not a lot in it, I have to admit. The second one (sRGB colourspace) is, to me, a little more contrasty, so there's less detail in the shadows under the eyebrow, and more bright areas on the nose etc. I prefer the first one (AdobeRGB) because of this, but as I say, it's fairly subtle.
