How do you make an avatar small enough to comply with the size constraints set by the forum :

In PS resize to 80x80 pixels then 'save for the web' at medium quality

I do not have any photoprocessing software at the moment.

This decision was originally taken for me by the inability of my computer to handle the software.

However I have now replaced my computer, so is Photoshop the software to buy :

We do have one copy of Photoshop at work, which is on a colleague's machine.

I am normally too busy using Autocad.

The "industry standard" is the full version of Photoshop, but Photoshop Elements offers most of the functions at a more modest outlay.

If you are keen, I would suggest Photoshop Elements, although there are lower cost options that people use successfully, and I would think they are just about to tell us what those are?

I use Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS2, although for most purposes I prefer the higher speed of 7.
Best regards, John

John,

Thank you for the information.

Photoshop Elements 5 is well reviewed by PCPro and available at a modest cost.

But I shall just see what other comments there are before finally deciding.

I use Elements 4 at the moment and am happy with it. Stupidly enough it is cheaper to buy the full version of Elements 5 than the upgrade, which is one reason why I haven't upgraded.
However for simple resizing jobs I tend to use Irfanview, which is free.

GIMP is worth a try, it's free so what have you got to loose?

for my money it packs more punch than any editor costing less than £100, I see no good reason not to have it unless you actually shell out for CS3.

And for something as simple as re-sizing I'm pretty sure MS-Paint would do the trick, it comes with Windows 3.1 and later.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Microsoft have a clever little tool for resizing pictures - A right click on the file in the explorer and a little 'Resize' menu comes up for you to choose the size you'd like to resize to
Look for 'Image resizer' on this page - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

I wonder if you have tried Picture Window Pro?

I have read a few more reviews of Photoshop Elements 5, all of them very positive and have now just ordered it from Warehouse Express (£55).

Perhaps the best. But because it's not Photoshop, the Photoshop crowd won't agree.
