Autumn Colours

I've spent the last couple of days taking (literally!) hundreds of photos around my village. I adore anything orange and I also adore my D-FA100 Macro, the upshot of which is that I have lots and lots of close-ups of leaves on the turn and I thought I'd share a few of my favourites with you all.

This is my first attempt at adding frames to my photos (after being impressed by several I've seen on this forum) and I'm not sure if they suit my subjects or not? I've tried a couple of different types and I'd appreciate any comments on them or on the subject of framing photos in general.

Thanks for looking!

I think the long horizontal framing works quite well, it let the vertical come out of the photo.

Lovely photos, the colours are so nice that season.

I don't think the frames work at all on the horizontal shots, Maybe on the square ones they could be narrower. But I do like the content.

Bit shy about making comment but anyway, I like the pictures but don't like the borders. They seem to work better with horizontals but possibly thinner in width. Not too sure about the squares but thinner would appeal more. However, should say that generally I'm not a great lover of borders.

Rob.

I like the long horizontal frames, removes the distractions. Especially like that first one.

Mind you, the square ones are good too. Nice set of pictures!

Is there a record for the longest time taken for a reply? I actually posted these over two years ago and took the ominous silence to mean the frames were rubbish - I've not gone down the same route since...

The colours were nice that year though - this year it's all been a bit grey around these parts.

Hehe, Stefan also resurrected one of my old unanswered threads. Only a month old though, nothing like your Rip Van Winkle

I really like the long horizontal frame. Obviously it looks like a lot like 2.35:1 letterboxing from a film, but for me that's a big part of the appeal. It just looks classy. I don't usually care much for frames, but I might just steal this idea

I love the first two images, great colours and lovely bokeh. And the frame really makes it. I think they'd look far less slick in a 'normal' format.

These by Hyram were posted about nine months before I even poined the PU but here goes, Hyram's this week's judge so we've all got to keep in with him. The autumn colours in the pictures are just as good now as they were then. I'm not so keen on the black borders though, a bit too funereal.

No just thought it was pity it didn't get one comment in 2 years since the photos are excellent.

Hefty, I might have comment on one even older not sure though...

Thanks Stefan - it is appreciated!

I'm glad folk like them, I might even reconsider my anti-frame stance...

Can't remember looking at those, so thanks to Stefan for bringing these back to our attention.

The horizontal frames work well for me and here they do emphasize the autumn colours.
My favourite shot is the last one, looks at first as if the red leaf is missing some parts and then you realize that it is the OOF leaf in front of it.

Some of them could do with a little S-curve boost but I think that is a matter of taste (and they are fine as they are, I just think they would have higher impact with a little boost).

Composition-wise I do like all of them, in the last horizontal one I find the burnt out reflection on the right a bit too distracting.

Would be interesting to see your 2008 and 2009 autumn shots next to these from 2007...

To be honest 2008 and 2009 were very disappointing in comparison. In 2008 we had around 3-4 days of great colours and blue sky, in 2009 I don't think we've had any. In 2007 (when these were shot) we had several weeks of perfect conditions so I had many more to choose from - I've got my fingers crossed that 2010 will be similar.
