Atricious spulling mistokes! ! !

This is a rant: Please move on if not interested.

More & more posts on here contain glaring spelling errors for some of the simplest of photographic terms, some of which are easily corrected if re-learned properly. Now there is a difference between incorrect spelling and typographical error, the latter can only be improved with keyboard practice. The former can be corrected very easily by simple re-learning.

So:-

1: Lense - The spelling of lens is "lens". "Lense" is kind of half way between lens (singular) and lenses (plural), which is, well, nowhere really. It doesn't exist, it's "a letter short of a word" if you like, you know, like the phrase "a sandwich short of a picnic".

2: Aperature - correctly spelled and pronounced, is "aperture".

Now I know that some contributors on here a genuinely dyslexic and can be forgiven/excused for getting some words wrong. For the rest of us, for goodness sake learn to spell and pronounce the terms of your chosen art/craft/hobby correctly.

I have to plead guilty to sum spulling mishtakes, my only defence is that computer spell checkers have made me lazy!

Some people genuinely have a problem with spelling and I wouldn't want to put them off contributing. As long as we can understand what they are saying we can take on board their comments.

The term depth of field has in the past often been incorrectly described as depth of focus, and incredibly I saw a magazine just recently where a fairly high profile writer made the error. I haven't seen that mistake for many years!

I will make spelling errors for sure. English is not my first language, so the spelling errors will probably stay...
In terms of grammar the languages I speak are in the following order:

1) Dutch
2) English
3) German
4) Swedish

places 3 and 4 are very close together I must say. For both it is so that speaking is easy, writing is a little more difficult.

English is my mother tongue but Dutch is fast becoming my first language! I even dream in Dutch

As to spelling mistakes mine are due to my brain working faster than my fingers, and neither work very fast nowadays!

But that said some people do have a real problem with spelling - my son is dyslexic for instance, but I would hate to think he would be discouraged from contributing to a forum because of his spelling. He is understandable and that is what matters. Yes simple things like lense instead of lens are annoying to see but I really don't think it's worth getting your knickers in a twist over it.

I was careful to excuse contributions from those having dyslexia, I should have also excused posters who's first language is other than english. Apologies for that . . . but it's perfectly reasonable to get ones knickers twisted once in a while, particularly when the incorrect spelling of lens crops up for the umpteenth hundred time and causes one to see red.

I feel better now and have no wish to discourage any contributions to this forum from anybody. My post was an attempt at education, if it offends, it was not my intention, but hopefully everyone now knows how to spell lens correctly and will remember. Job done then.

Agree...to a point, it only takes a moment to run over your text for typo's before posting, but some of us just cant remember how to spell certain words, and life is way too short to turn to a dictionary everytime I post on a forum

And yes I have posted with typo's and spelling mistakes.

I've hit a few wrong keys, but if I notice I go back and edit the post. Depends on your point of view whether it's worth the trouble or not...

There is an incredibly arrogant and aggressive member on the AP forum, who also happens to be one of their dubious moderators.

He is always telling everyone off for various things and yet insists on spelling cast with an 'e' on the end so it ends up as caste..
