The shapes of the wings make these, and the soft rim-lighting adds beauty to it. The first one lacks these qualities so is the weakest I think. 2 & 4 have the bird perfectly placed in the frame. I'm no birdy person, but I can really appreciate these!

In photographing creatures such as these, all we can hope to achieve is is to add another layer of beauty, however slim that veneer may be.

Very nice Barry. Its difficult getting flight shots using the 1.7x and you've cracked it.
I know you use lightroom, I'd be inclined to lift the shadows a bit to put a little bit more light under the wings.
On #1 I'd use the temperature eye dropper on the rump of the tern just to make sure you haven't a colour cast. Maybe you already have

Very nice Barrie, I like the second one in particular. These birds are so graceful and I think your shots illustrate that perfectly.

Number 2 for me - the blurred background gives something other than just plain sky yet doesn't distract from the subject.

However when looking at them I thought the shapes of the terns in flight were quite artistic, so I've tried to process them with that in mind.
What do you think?
