Unfortunately, Apple has not bothered to implement support for Pentax's RAW file format in Aperture (or should I say MacOS X?). That means you can't import Pentax RAWs into Aperture (although you can JPGs, but I personally can't see the point as Aperture would simply be an advanced cataloguer and orgaziner).
I'm sure Apple will support Pentax directly in a forthcomming update to Aperture (even if version 1.1 is out the door with a reduced 300USD price tag WITHOUT Pentax support).
It's impressive (I've seen it work), but still expensive compared to the likes of CaptureONE (LE, not PRO), Bibble PRO and (most probably) LightRoom.
If RAW is what you're looking for, do take a look at LightRoom's Beta2. It's evolving neatly, should have ACR's quality and has an Apple-style interface!

If Aperture can handle Adobe DNG, then you can use the stand alone DNG convertor to take PEFs and turn 'em into DNGs

I'm also watching apples forums and see there are some hacks being done.
Apple has a tendancy to let the open source/hacker communities develope the stuff, then look at what works and incorporate it in one or two upgrades down the road.
I never buy first models/releases of anything, wait for the bugs to surface and solutions to come, then buy.
Never hurts to keep your nose to the wind and ask though....
I'm not ready to switch to complete raw workflow yet..volume doesn't justify the cost right now, but that is changing...future looks bright.

Yup, that would be great, but it doesn't work. I've tried on a friend's PowerMac with Aperture. PEFs converted to DNG with Adobe's converter, and Aperture did not recognize them.
Apparently, there is much more to a DNG RAW file than meets the eye. I'll try to unearth my findings in my notes or blog about this...

Another way to handle things for those who cannot afford Aperture, is Extensis Portfolio. I use this in conjunction with iPhoto. All my untouched PEF files are documented in Portfolio, and from there I export them to .jpg files and into iPhoto. From iPhoto I make selections for viewing on the TV. From Portfolio I make selections for the Internet/Printing etc. I like Portfolio, it has saved me a lot of time, and I know where everything is. It also supports directly Pentax PEF. Until Apple supports this file format, I would not consider the purchase of Aperture at any price.

I am not convinced aperture is the best bit of software to use (too slow on my 2GHz G5 iMac for a start), but the latest update from Apple has made it compatible with RAW files produced by my *ist D.

Fateamendable, I saw that the d is working but the dls aren't the ds2 I'm not sure...appleforums.....I see people are editing a plist file from within aperture to get it to open pefs from the ds and dl, but am waighting to see if anybody spots image defects as a result.

Sorry, I did not realise that there was a difference in the RAW files produced by the different Pentax cameras.
I have 1GB of Ram in my iMac.

It's the header that is different. The textual name of the camera appears in the header and allows the RAW convertor to deal with different models. In the case of Pentax all the software has to do is be made aware of the the "new" model names (and not a new format).
